preliminary task

analysis of the film good fellas

the mise en scene for the film goodfellas:
flasy cars
nice suits
weapons
drugs
cigars

The camera usage in goodfellas.
they also used a variety of shots my favourite one was the tracking shot when henry hill goes to the club through the back entrance.

about the film:

The 1990 Martin Scorsese's film Goodfellas, is a classic movie about the world of organized crime. The film starts off in New York City in the 1950's, and is on the life of a poor Irish-Italian named Henry Hill. henry is a criminal who threw the movie, rises threw the Brooklyn neighborhood's organized crime branch, and has Henry and his family living the good life with his profits from his criminal activity, finally Henry is forced to testify against his former partners and lands Henry and his family in the FBI's Witness protection program. In his teen age years Henry starts working in a local hangout for wise guy's (members of organized crime). At first Henry is put to work, parking cars and little odd jobs for the wise guy's. After a few years things escalate into more involvement for Henry like working in an underground gambolin, g ring, running messages, Torching cars, and to selling stolen cigarettes. When Henry ends up getting arrested, and after a light slap on the wrists, Henry earns much trust and respect and starts off on his way to being the newest gang member.

Analysis of the film scarface

the mise en scene for the film scarface.
flashy suits
nice cars
cigars
heavy ammunition

camera angles
they used alot of differnt shots ome of them which i found very interesting was the 360 shot in the beginning og the film where he is getting interviewed by three officers this shows how intense the situatuion is.

lighting
wasnt very glamourous or bright as it wasnt filmed in modern days.

the audience is was targeted too:
i believe the target audience to be young males in the age range of 18-30. The film is rated an 18 so obviously the target audience cannot be anyone below this age. There are some very adult subjects in this film, such as murder and drugs. ‘Scarface’ is a very typical male film. The preferred reading of ‘Scarface’ is that everything comes at a price, especially greed and a thirst for wealth. A negotiated reading of ‘Scarface’ is that crime does pay, and drugs can earn you a lot of money if you are careful and not greedy. A negative reading of ‘Scarface’ is that crime didn’t pay for Montana, but it could for other people. A positive reading of ‘Scarface’ is that gangsters get away with everything, and they are above the law.

codes and conventions of a gangster film

1. The hero is an immigrant who dislikes his low status in life and wants more.

2. Unlike the Western, this story takes place in the big city. The wide open plains have been traded in for the seedy alleyways and
wharves of the urban jungle.

3. The gangster can only gain power by taking it. It is survival of the fittest, and the only law is the law of the jungle.

4. The only loyalty the gangster feels is for his own immigrant roots.

5. Success is measured in material goods - flashy cars, expensive clothes, and mansions. Women are measures of success as well.

6. The hero's antagonist is society, and the enforcers of the law. The police, the FBI, the CIA represent the enforcers of societal status quo.

7. The end justifies the means.

We tried to include some of these points in our film it wasn't really possible to include all of them but the main ones where in there.
